Hitting the Road

Today, Jack and I are packing a truck and moving to Montreal. Well, to be more accurate, Jack has been packing up a truck while I've been back to work for three very busy, post-wedding, post-vacation [sort of] days. 

I'm excited, a little nervous and very ready for this move. I think the best part of the moving-portion will be the stop-over we have planned in Grand Falls, NB. Since we didn't have time to take a honeymoon after our wedding [what with packing and pre-move visits and all] we are spending a night in a cabin up that way. Should be plenty romantic, mosquitos and all.

I'll be getting back into the blogging swing of things next week sharing some awesome pre-wedding outfits. If I'm a little spotty over the next two weeks, please bare with me, we'll be settling in and since I didn't help with the packing I'm pretty sure I'll have some un-packing duties. Check in tomorrow for my last guest post - a delicious little recipe to take you into the weekend!

Thanks for letting me invade Sorren's blog while she's off prancing around with the love of her life, and probably looking phenomenal doing so.  I was trying to channel Sorren's classic style by wearing what is becoming one of my favorite combos, shorts and a blazer.  I LOVE blazers because they can dress up anything--jeans, skirts, dresses, and even shorts.  And when they're in a bright color, even better!  This red blazer totally kicked up my otherwise neutral outfit, effortlessly.  Would you wear a brightly colored blazer?

Hello Classic Noise readers! My name is Kristin and I write a small style blog out of the East coast of Canada coined "Doll Parade". I am posting on behalf of Sorren who is currently enjoying some much deserved post-wedding bliss. First and foremost, a huge congratulations is in order for Mrs. S, who, can I just say, looked absolutely drop-dead gorgeous on her wedding day - so if you haven't seen a photo just yet, you wait! 

Sorren suggested I put together an outfit for this guest post, and I of course happily obliged, since, truth be told, I pretty much solely live for my next favorite dress or shoe (yes, they change often). Since we're being honest today on Classic Noise, I will admit that part of me is starting to mentally abandon my Summer wear. I'm sort of not ready for the Summer to be over, though another part of me is just so excited for pants & cozy sweaters. This said, I decided to put together something quintessentially Summer so that I can say kind of, sorta, say... goodbye. So here's to Summer. Here's to bike rides and berry picking, to wildflowers & picnics, to cliff jumping & warm evening walks. When Sorren asked me to do a little guest post on her blog to be posted when she was off getting MARRIED, I was thrilled. I love Classic Noise and I think Sorren is just the sweetest. 

On my little blog, I rarely post photos of myself. I tend to talk a lot about other people… posting interviews with local artists, features on my favourite local stores, boutiques & galleries and OF COURSE, my current favourite songs. Since Sorren and Jack are moving to Montreal (sooner than later), I thought I’d share a favourite song from my favourite band that did the same Halifax to Montreal move… Wintersleep! 



Their new album, Hello Hum, is great. It’s a departure from their past few albums... but still consists of the same haunting vocals, killer drums beats and perfect bass lines. (Seriously, Mike Bigelow is a great bass player).

Guest Post: Courtesy Laugh

When trying to write Amber's intro I got tongue tied. No lie. Hello Classic Noise friends! I'm Amber, Sorren's other, less real soulmate, here to make sure you are still eating while Sorren's away getting married. To help me out with this food post, I've resourced a favorite summer TV show of Sorren's and mine, MasterChef, for a tasty light dinner idea. I decided to try these Thai-spiced Crabcakes that super likable contestant Josh whipped up earlier this season. He also made a salad and curry with these, but I was lazy and not that hungry so all you're getting are the cakes. 

I cut this very easy recipe in half to get two servings. Below are my ingredients, minus the ones I forgot to photograph, so...helpful, I know. As you can see, I have used all fresh ingredients here except for the chili sauce, breadcrumbs, garlic, crab, or lime juice. Actually the egg expires in two days so I don't really know if that counts either. But the point is I minced the cilantro with my HANDS.

 

First step was to whisk the chili sauce, garlic, and lime juice together, and then add in olive oil. I dumped half of that out as directed to save as a dipping sauce for later. Then I whisked in the egg and cilantro. I mixed absolutely everything in this measuring cup. 'Tis a super quick, one-bowl recipe, my friends. Do not let the cute tiny bowls I used purely for blog purposes fool you.

    

Next I seasoned the crab a bit, and dumped it into the egg mixture, which is a much more beautiful yellow-with-green-and-red color than the photo below suggests. After stirring a bit, it became clear to me that my mixture was too thin to form into cakes. I think earlier I probably set aside less than the half for dipping than I should have. So instead of rolling my cakes in the breadcrumbs after forming them, I dumped the breadcrumbs directly into the mixture to thicken it up a bit, and ended up nearly doubling the amount of breadcrumbs to do so. It worked out well, I promise.

I don't have any fancy ring molds to form my cakes in, so I just rinsed out the crab can and packed the mixture in there twice, turning them out onto parchment paper. It worked pretty well, giving me two giant beef patty-sized cakes. I put them in the fridge for about half an hour to set; I'd recommend a little longer if you are planning to also photograph them under a bright light on a hot day.

Lastly, I melted half a tablespoon of butter in my medium-high heat pan, and cooked them uncovered 5 minutes each side. I got a nice light char on the outside and soft cakiness on the inside. I forgot to photograph the curry powder with all my ingredients, but I did sprinkle some over the top of the cakes when they were done as directed. It was very subtle, so I think I might mix in half a teaspoon or so next time. In the end, though, this little dish was--as Gordon Ramsay or any other person who speaks English would say--"delicious."

Hi All! I'm happy to do a guest post for Sorren while she is off getting married.  How exciting! Congrats to you and Jack during this memorable time. 

I don't typically have trouble deciding what to wear for occasions, especially if a colorful skirt is involved.  But dressing a room is a little more challenging for me.  I find the task of deciding on artwork to match room decor particularly hard, there are so many options out there!  So this time around when hunting for artwork inspiration,  I decided to take a literal approach and start looking for art pieces similar to my outfits.  I looked around one of my favorite places to find artwork and homemade goods, Etsy.  I found a lovely abstract piece by this artist that reminded me of a vintage skirt and tank top I recently wore.

The art piece is cheerful which totally matches the mood I was going for with my outfit. I always feel happier when I'm wearing color, so it only makes sense that the walls of my home should be colorful too.

I will definitely try choosing artwork inspired by my outfits in the future.  After all, your home and clothing should reflect your personal style and personality right?

On a recent trip to the States I grabbed some edamame hummus & falafel chips at Trader Joe's as a road trip snack. Well. The combination was amazing and I wanted to find my own edamame, or soybean, hummus recipe as soon as possible! This is a bright-tasting alternative to your usual chickpea hummus. It has the satisfaction of a creamy dip to serve as a snack without too many guilt-inducing calories : ) Enjoy!

Edamame Hummus

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups edamame (green soy beans) cooked and shelled

2 tbsp tahini paste (sesame seed paste)

1/4 cup water plus more if needed

1 tsp lemon zest

Juice of one lemon

1 clove garlic, crushed

Salt to taste

Pepper

2 tsp olive oil

In a food processor, blend soy beans, tahini, water, lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, salt, pepper and 1 tsp olive oil until smooth. Ass more water if needed until consistency is smooth. Place in a bowl and top with remainder oil.

*In the photos, you'll see I didn't place extra oil on top to serve. You can choose whichever way you prefer!

Hi Classic Noise readers! You may recognize me lurking around in the comments for quite some time now, but if you haven't, let me introduce myself. I'm Katrina from the demure muse. (Nice to meet ya, too!) While Sorren is off getting married (eep! So exciting!), I'm here to share one of my go-to summer outfits. I was never a big fan of maxi dresses until this year. Thanks to my slightly taller than average height, past dresses that I had fallen in love with never showed me much love-- they hovered over my ankles and looked awkward.

Hello! I’m so excited to be a guest blogger on Sorren’s blog while she’s off getting married. For those of you I haven’t had the pleasure to meet yet, my name is Melissa and I write the blog Miss Melissa. Sorren and I bonded over the fact that we are both Canadian and she laughs at my jokes. Add to that the fact that she’s insanely sweet and adorable and it was a blogging buddy match made in blogger heaven. We now have a lovely friendship based on mutual respect and stalking. 

I had every intention of passing along some words of marriage wisdom to Jack and Sorren, but then I realized I have no place giving anyone advice on dating let alone marriage. Instead, I would like to share what some young children had to say about marriage because, well, it’s just adorable.
