Wedding Wednesday: Playlists

As we get closer to the date, we find a lot of the big things are done and decided and it's all the little things that require our attention. Little things like decorations, flowers and playlists.

When planning a wedding on a budget, one must make decisions. One of the decisions Jack and I made was to spend extra on our photographer [who was still an amazing deal! *shameless plug*] and forego a DJ. I've tried, a number of times, to write out our feelings regarding wedding DJs but nothing comes out right nice, so I will leave it at this: we have decided to build playlists. One playlist for the cocktail hour and dinner portion of the evening, and one for the reception/dance. DEFINITELY let me know some of your favourite dance floor tunes because, let me tell you, it's not been the easy.

Cocktail Hour & Dinner ----------------------------
Sorry Bub, Tennis has got you trumped. Along with some cults, bjork and beck we're going for a laid back, breezy vibe with some edge.

Reception & Dance -----------------------------
Great mix of all kinds of dance tunes to keep our toes tapping. Our actual list will have both MUCH cooler, and much MUCH lamer music.

Building these playlists has obviously lead me down the road of "what ifs" mainly - what IF we could afford not only a great DJ but our dream DJ, who would we get?

DREAM DJs:

1. James Murphy. obviously. I really don't know what else to write because "obviously" sums it all up. James Murphy has an amazing handle on music that cuts right through me, sending me into a tizzy and blinding me with the need to dance [in the privacy of my own home - clearly]. Every time I listen to Daft Punk is Playing at My House, I sub in James Murphy and imagine my wedding. Seriously; dream. come. true.

2. Ali Shaheed Muhammad of Tribe Called Quest. This guy is amazing. We were lucky enough to score tickets to his set at Halifax Jazz Fest two summers ago. He was spinning, opening up for De La Soul and he stole the show. It was amazing. Not only have I never danced so hard in my life BUT he was so friendly and it was infectious. Best. Show. Ever.

  1. I just got married in June and decided to go the playlist route as well. The dance playlist was the hardest one to put together, but I also wasn't that worried about having a packed dance floor. Mainly I just wanted to hear music that my husband and I liked, and to give people the opportunity to dance if they wanted to.

These were the songs that got a lot of people on the dance floor: "Rock With You" by MJ, "Gold Digger" by Kanye, "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" by NKOTB, "Party in the USA" by Miley Cyrus, "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, "Love Shack" by The B-52s, "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond and "867-5309 (Jenny)" by Tommy Tutone.

I don't know, these might be way cheesier than what you are looking for. Good luck and happy wedding!

  4. so my hubby and I own a DJing company, and if I could give you any advice it would be to remember that not everyone likes the same music as you guys do so make sure to mix it up with all sorts of stuff ... classics, ya know what I mean .... I would also make sure to start the dance part of the night off a little mellow and then slowly progress up to party you butt off kinda songs .... hope it all works out for you guys ... I know this can be a challenge!!

  5. Maybe you could get each guest to suggest 1 song and build a playlist up from that?
